Legendary Shotguns
Since the 14th century, craftsmen in the town of Suhl, Germany, deep in
the Thuringen Forest, have been known as the world’s finest weapons
makers. Those who acquired hunting guns made by Suhl gunsmiths could be
sure of their quality, dependability, accuracy and exceptional beauty.
Royal hunting parties made the richly ornamented Suhl guns the talk of the
continent, while American settlers carried their trusty Suhl-made shotguns
across the ocean into the new world.
In 1898, the Merkel brothers founded a factory in Suhl that was the first
to industrially manufacture over-and-under guns. The Merkel factory grew
rapidly, and in 1914 the production line introduced side-by-side shotguns.
The reputation of Merkel guns circulated quickly throughout Germany, and
then throughout the world. Today, these classic side-by-sides and
over-and-unders rank among the most desired firearms in the western world.
Many Merkel owners still use guns made in the 1920s and '30s and treasure
them as highly valued collectables. And now, after the political events of
1989, fine Merkel firearms can again be delivered to the U.S. market.
Available in over-and-under, traditional side-by-side and combination
designs, Merkel shotguns, drillings, and combination guns represent an
unparalleled investment in quality and value. Merkel engraving and
hand-carving is second to none in the world. The master craftsmen who
create the exquisite engraving and hand-checkering on your Merkel shotgun
rank as the most accomplished artisans of their kind. Many are descended
from generations of engravers and carvers who have, over the centuries,
produced the richly ornate Merkels cherished by European royalty and
knowledgeable firearms enthusiasts.
But the beauty of a Merkel is more than skin deep. Qualities like cold
hammer-forged steel barrels, actions built to perfection and high strength
locking systems make your Merkel shotgun an heirloom to be passed down
from generation to generation. Both side-by-sides and over-and-unders
incorporate such features as Greener cross-bolts, or Kersten locks and
double-barrel locking lugs.
Our Policy
Firearm safety and firearm
responsibility have been and continue to be the commitment of GSI, Steyr
and Merkel in the marketing and distribution of commercial and law
enforcement firearms. The emphasis placed on safe handling and safe
storage of firearms is reflected in our sales and marketing materials,
manuals and the design and manufacture of our products. GSI strictly
adheres to all federal, state and local laws in marketing of its lines of
firearms. While education and regulation cannot eliminate the possibility
of an unintentional discharge or the use of a firearm by an irresponsible
individual, GSI, Steyr and Merkel remain committed in our pledge of
firearm safety and responsibility in marketing.

Merkel shotguns are designed to meet the most demanding requirements not
only for the field, but for competition as well. A long list of
international and Olympic competition medals have accompanied the Merkel
name throughout the twentieth century.
Your shotgun is a reflection not only of superb quality and function, but
of the fine art that has become synonymous with the Merkel name. Should
you wish to have a gun built to your own unique specifications, Merkel's
custom gun shop can produce custom specifications, wood carving, and
engraving. Merkel is also one of the few manufacturers in the world still
producing a traditional 16-gauge shotgun. Whichever Merkel you choose,
congratulate yourself on having made an excellent choice. Few firearms
today offer the pride of ownership, pure joy of use and still provide the
comfort of a sound investment value.

The
idea of forming a Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Foundation (HSSHF) to
raise funds for a broad-based industry communications program first came about
in May 1998 at the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)-sponsored Shooting
Sports Summit held in Branson, Missouri. The NSSF turned that idea into reality
at a series of meetings in the fall of 1998 and early 1999, culminating in the
chartering of the Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Foundation to
"…create a sustainable environment for the shooting sports in
America." The concept was expanded to legal defense later in 1998 in
response to politically motivated lawsuits against the industry.
The Hunting &
Shooting Sports Heritage Fund is administered by the Hunting & Shooting
Sports Heritage Foundation, whose officers include chairman Steve Hornady,
president of Hornady Manufacturing Company; vice chairman Don Gobel, president
of Browning; treasurer Tom Gura, president & CEO of the Winchester Division
of Olin Corporation; and secretary Bob Delfay, president & CEO of the
National Shooting Sports Foundation.
Funding for the Heritage
Fund was originally to come solely from the voluntary contribution of 1% of
hunting and shooting sales from manufacturers, with non-manufacturers invited to
support the HSSHF by becoming Century Club members by donating $100 or more. As
the Heritage Fund quickly gained a broad base of support, other segments of the
shooting industry-sales reps, publishers, distributors and retailers-asked if
they could more fully participate by contributing a percentage of sales of
hunting and shooting related items.
Today there are some 100
companies that have pledged 1% (1/2% in the case of manufacturer's reps) to help
preserve our hunting and shooting sports heritage. More than 150 individuals
have become Century Club members by contributing $100 or more to the Heritage
Fund. Many other individuals are showing their support by contributing whatever
they can.
The Heritage Fund
provides funding for a professional, aggressive response to politically
motivated lawsuits filed against the industry and to educate the public about
the industry's long-standing commitment to safe and responsible firearms
ownership. The highly respected product liability law firm of Brobeck, Phleger
and Harrison has been retained to help provide a coordinated legal defense.
The Heritage Fund also
provides funding for Project HomeSafe, the NSSF's acclaimed firearms safety
program that provides free cable gunlocks to urban gun owners. Implemented with
the cooperation of local police departments and mayor's offices, Project
HomeSafe has significantly increased awareness about safe and responsible
firearms ownership.

Thought's
From Steve
I'm
not looking forward much to this fall’s elections however. I expect
the shooting industry will be savaged by the Clinton/Gore campaigns and
supported by every liberal (unbiased right?) reporter and TV talking
head that can get airtime. We have our work cut out for us and I
hope those of you that support the industry in our efforts to stop the
unwarranted attacks on firearms will appreciate the efforts we make this
fall to correct the misinformation and outright lies put out by this
administration and the Gore campaign apparatchiks.
Elsewhere, in this site you will find a listing of the
Companies that belong to the Hunting and
Shooting Sports Heritage Fund. These are the companies that
are funding the legal challenges as well as the media campaign to
restore our rightful image. Please give them your support and choose
their products when you need to buy something. Our company is there and
so are most of our competitors. We need your help. Obviously
there are some names that are not there and if you have the time you can
write them or call and ask why they don't support this industry wide
effort. No one is excluded.
Also, a site to check for up-to-date information is the BulletPoints
page by the NSSF. They have some great insights into current
events anf information that you won't get from the major media at large.
In the August editions of the NRA publications is a listing
of the companies, organizations and individuals that supported the
Million Mom Fizzle. Again if you have the time please let them
know what you think. If you don't have a copy of the August NRA
pub's then shame on you. Join! Now! I know they're not perfect but
I get so tired of hearing how people won't join because they did this or
that. Bull___. There are 4,000,000 members and no organization
will satisfy everyone, ever. But they are the biggest, toughest guys we
have on our side and they are either feared or respected.
If you're not a member of the NRA then you are
helping the other side. It's real simple, you're either with us or
against us. Stop whining about the mistakes they make and
join. If you want to support another organization as well,
fine. But remember, nobody, and I mean nobody has the same clout
on Capitol Hill.
This is the link to the NRA.
Go there. NOW. Sign up!
Thanks for your
time, lets go shooting.

History
of Gamaliel Shooting Supply
The following artwork was taken from an original
oil-on-canvas painted by Mrs. Belvia Pare and given as a gift to her son,
Gamaliel Shooting Supply President, Garon Pare, in 1990. The painting
tells the history of Gamaliel Shooting Supply from its beginning in the
late 60's when Garon started selling target ammo out of the trunk of his
'65 Chevy.
|
|
|
Garon's tan '65 Chevrolet,
loaded with target ammo. As Garon was getting more involved in the
expensive sport of trapshooting in the late 1960's, he peddled
shells out of this car to help with expenses. He taught both his boys how
to shoot at an early age. The shooter pictured is Garon's older son,
Geoff, who is now Vice-President of Gamaliel Shooting Supply. |
|
|
Around 1970, the Pares
started selling shooting supplies out of their utility room on the carport
of this house on Bugtussle Road. Garon's wife, Faye, ran this little
business while Garon was working as an auto mechanic. That's Garon's
younger son, Grady, with his Sunday school book in his hand. He's now a
physician at the Medical Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky. |
|
|
In 1976, the first "gun
shop" was built across the road from the house with the utility
room. The building is shown here after several additions. Fishing at
the pond is Garon's father, Garnett Pare. "Grandaddy" still
fishes some today. |
|
|
This '76 Chevrolet pickup was
used to deliver targets and shells to local clubs. It was the first new
truck the Pares ever owned. (It's still used by G.S.S. today.) Mrs. Pare
also painted a bird dog in this scene -- Garon has raised bird dogs and
been an avid quail hunter for over 30 years. |
|
|
Garon & Faye bought this
house on Fountain Run Road in 1990. The adjacent acreage was used to build
the present Gamaliel Shooting Supply. |
|
|
Pictured is Gamaliel Shooting
Supply at its present location, when it was built in July 1990. It has had
six additions to the building since this picture was painted. The vehicles
in this scene played an important part in the growth of the business. The
'68 International was G.S.S.'s first "big" truck. It was bought
in 1978 to make deliveries adn to use to sell shels and reloading supplies
at the larger shoots. The UPS truck is shown because of its significance
in G.S.S.'s mail-order business. Gamaliel Shooting Supply began shipping
UPS around 1985. As the business greww, they began using additional
carriers and now ship all over the U.S. and to many foreign countries.
(The black Oldsmobile was Garon and Faye's personal vehicle at the time of
the painting.) |
|
|
|
|
Today, Gamaliel Shooting
Supply employs 20 people and has semi trucks that deliver all over the
southeastern United States. The mail-order business has grown and now even
includes sales through the internet. Faye retired in December of
1996. Garon is semi-retired. They still travel and work the shoots while
son, Geoff, manages the business |
|
Beliva Pare died
in May of 1999.
She is sadly missed by her family and friends,
but her memory lives on through her paintings.

KOLAR ARMS
For many years, the manufacture and availability of high quality
competition shotguns has been limited to several overseas gun makers. The
discerning clay target shooter had few choices when looking to purchase a
shotgun that would withstand the rigors of clay target shooting.
This is no longer the case!
Kolar Arms of Racine, Wisconsin introduces its quality line of
American made skeet, sporting and trap shotguns after four years of extensive
research and testing. Kolar is the world leader in the manufacture of its famous
AAA sub-gauge tube sets and competitions shotgun services.
From the initial concept of producing the gun, through its complete
CAD design, prototype stage, and years of testing, the objective was
singular. Produce the highest quality, ultimately reliable target
shotgun that money can buy. The objective is assured by utilizing
state-of-the-art CNC manufacturing and CMM quality assurance techniques. |
|
|
The heart of the Kolar shotgun is its receiver, which is machined form
a solid bar of 4140 chrome-moly steel. Its low profile design features
Boss style locking lugs, which engage a patented insert in the barrels
monobloc. This unique variation of one of the worlds most reliable
locking systems, coupled with Kolar's massive locking bolt, cancels
torsional stress and relieves wear and tear on the hinge pins. This
patented insert system also allows for easy fitting of extra barrels and
keeping the action tight through hundreds of thousands of rounds. |
If the receiver is the heart of the Kolar gun, then its nerve center
lies in the patented fire control. The trigger incorporates all the
features found in the world's finest competition shotguns. It is
detachable, mechanical, selectable, and adjustable for length. The
hammers are rebounding and coil spring driven for reliability. Sears are
heat treated and titanium nitrited, assuring consistent feel and let-off
for the life of the gun.
Barrels for the Kolar competition shotgun are available in 28",
30", and 32" lengths for the over/under, and 34" for the
un-single trap model. They are long coned, factory overbored and feature
fixed or screw-in chokes to produce minimum recoil and optimum pattern
performance. All barrels feature flat or step tramline ribs that are
designed to assist in rapid target acquisition.
