Sunday (a very rainy day!!!)
Event 12 – Singles Championship:

Kay Ohye of New Jersey, who had missed just one 16-yard target during the week, ran 200 in Sunday’s program and 125 in shootoff over 11 others, earning the singles title here for the fourth time. Eliminated in the overtime were Drew Waller of Ohio, Cathy Wehinger of Wisconsin, Allen Tomnitz of South Dakota, Glenn Buege of Michigan, Patrick McCarthy of Ohio, Brad Dysinger of Ohio, Richard Marshall Jr. of Nebraska, Steven Biechele of Michigan, Jeffrey Webb of Indiana, Lou Ann Munson of Minnesota, and Gregory Santo of Michigan.

Kay has earned more Great Lakes Grand championships than anyone. His 11 include the ’92, ’94, ’99, and this year’s Singles; the ’95 Handicap; the ’89 and ’00 Doubles; the ’95, ’96, and ’99 All-Around; and the ’99 High Over All. His 396 in the ’99 All-Around is the record tally at Great Lakes Grand on the 400 championship targets.

The 140 squads of Singles Championship shooters numbered 535—just 10 fewer than last year. One of those 535 was defending champ Steve Corwin of Ohio. Steve had 99 in Thursday’s 16s, 100 on Friday, and 99 on Saturday. On an every other day basis, this should have been his day for a perfect score, but it wasn’t. Steve ended up with 198.

Another who had missed just one 16-yard target before the championship event was ’93 champ Paul Shaw of Ontario. He ran the first 100 Sunday morning but missed three in the afternoon.

Former singles champs Leo Harrison III of Missouri (’91) and MTA President George Snellenberger of Michigan (’96) weren’t “monkeying” around today as each tried but failed for his second singles crown. Leo ended with 199, and George, who was also the ’96 doubles champ, broke 198.

Cathy Wehinger of Wisconsin, one of the 12 with 200 straight for the title, headed ladies for the fourth time. She was the first women’s winner in ’88 and then in ’96 and ’98. She now has earned 13 total Great Lakes Grand category titles, tieing Debbie Ohye of New Jersey for the most titles among ladies.

Justin Liniger of Ohio broke one more target this year than last year—199—stepping up from ’00 sub-junior runnerup to this year’s sub-junior champ. Justin has just a few more days to compete as a sub-junior.

Michael Hansford, a new ATA member, who shoots at Durand SC, earned the top trophy in Class D.

Carl Chadwell of Ohio registered his 100,000th target during the event.

Here’s the complete trophy list:

Shooting tips of the Century:

Yes - you can!

Go ahead and risk it, say hello!

"If you think you can, or if you think you can't... you're right!"

Do it big, or stay in bed.

Be anchored to some ideal, philosophy or cause that keeps you too excited to sleep.

Practice being excited!

Have the guts to go!

More powerful than the will to win is the courage to begin

Do one thing after another, one at a time.

Never try to catch two frogs with one hand

When one must, one can!

Change your thoughts and you change your world.

Your friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you.

Shoot as if it is impossible to fail!

When things go wrong, don't go with them!

Forget tomorrow, today is the day!

Don't fear what you want.

He conquers who endures!

Big shots are only little shots who keep shooting!

The real sin is to persuade oneself that the second best is anything but second best.

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

"To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life"
Robert Louis Stevenson

If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got!

“Far better it is to dare mighty things, even though checkered by failure, than to live in that gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat...”
Teddy Roosevelt

Gun control is not about guns;
it's about control!

Press on!
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent!

Hit just one more target, why not!

The squeaky wheel doesn't always get greased, it often gets replaced.

From self alone expect applause.
