All-American Ray Stafford, for the second consecutive event, carded the lone
high score, this time heading 267 others for the top trophy. This was Ray's
999th perfect doubles score since his first in 1919 during the Grand American
Doubles Class Championship. (He was one of five tied with 100 in that event
and didn't
collect a trophy.)

Senior vet Allen Tomnitz missed just the second bird of his last pair,
ending
with 99 and his category's trophy. Shaking his head in disbelief as he left
the line, Allen lamented, "It was a classic example of over-confidence. I
simply began celebrating one target too soon."

Two-year shooter and Class A winner Don Huffaker was delighted to collect his first Satellite Grand trophy after entering his career-best doubles score of 99. "I just can't believe it," exclaimed Don. "My best score before today was 94."

Henry Shaper needed one perfect shootoff round over Bill Myers after the two deadlocked with 95 apiece for the Class B award. The two are often squadmates, and both are members of the Dallas Gun Club.

Sub-junior All-Americans Matthew Drexler and Steven Urich, with 94 apiece, needed 14 extra rounds before Matt earned their age-group trophy. The two seemed intent on shooting through the night until Steven dutched the first pair of the final round.

New ATA member Joe Blow wasn't in contention for a trophy, but he was proud of his 92 anyway. At his first registered shoot, Joe was competing with a new K-80 he had just bought on Tuesday. "I love this gun already," Joe testified. Due to business commitments--he's owner of a trucking company back home in Minnesota--he was unable to stay for the rest of the tournament, but he plans to pack his new gun and be a contender at Great Lakes Grand.

Analysis and Rationale
of
The Great Lakes Grand Results Pages

While reach and frequency will not be measured directly, logic indicates that among active Trapshooters the impact will be significant. National trends indicate that 50% to 60% of all households have computers wired to the internet. And, there is no reason to suggest that Trapshooter Households vary from that trend. Thus, of the 55,000 ATA registered shooters 30,250 (55,000 X 55%) will have unique interest in the official results of the Great Lakes Grand, whether they attend or not.

Therefore, well founded Media estimates are:

Reach 30,250
Number of event days 6
Number of event reports with sponsor I.D. 16
Number of exposures (Frequency) 484,000

This exclusive advertising opportunity with this format has no parallel in reaching active Trapshooters, often... period!

There was quite a lull at the trophy case when the results of todays Lake Michigan Singles were posted. Just one prize could be awarded, and that was to Class D winner Charles Vanderveen. His 98 was two short of putting him into the carryover with 28 competitors deadlocked for the top two trophies. (See High Scores below for those tied.)

Senior vet Allen Tomnitz celebrated two 100sthe first for his 100th birthday today and the second for his 100 straight in the program. Allen, in remarkable physical condition for his 100 years, continued his birthday celebration long into the night, dancing on the practice trap with 100 ladies who had formed a line to take a turn tripping the light fantastic with the captain of the senior vet All-American team. The dance music was provided by three members of the Michigan TA board of directors, with George Snellenberger on tuba, Del Nye on flute, and Ben Johnston on drums.

[Bob, Im really getting into these notes!]

The amazing increase in entries was attributed to 146 inmates from the local womens prison who went on strike last week until the warden granted them permission to participate in todays singles race. Each joined the ATA, fired under close supervision by prison officials, and then boarded the bus for the trip back to downtown Mason. Their scores didnt make the high-score list because none had any experience with a shotgun nor had any of them been convicted of a crime using a firearm. Five who will be released before August do plan to participate at the Grand American. Theyll be in the ones in the striped shooting vests, so if you see them in Vandalia, please welcome them as new ATA members.

Look for todays remaining 16-yard trophy winners tomorrow after the results of the Lake Huron Singles Class are posted.

Two trophies are still at stake, with Kay Ohye and Gregory Santo deadlocked after each entered perfect scores this morning in the Lake Huron Singles Class Championship. Kay, who was Thursdays Singles winner, hasnt missed a 16-yard target since the tournament began. He has been Great Lakes Grand Singles champ three of the last four years so its fair to predict he will not intend to miss a target Sunday as he tries for #4. Greg is fresh from winning his Podunk state singles crown where he not only didnt miss in the program but continued 999 straight in shootoff before defeating ninety-nine others.

These are definitely two to watch during Sundays Great Lakes Grand Singles Championship, and Ill be watching them for you. For those of you who are at the tournament and want to observe, Kay will be in Squad 14 and Greg in 41 (and yes, I checked with them both to get permission to let you know their squad numbers for tomorrow). Check back here tomorrow for the results.

Sub-junior winner Justin Liniger has just been notified that he has been awarded a full-ride, four-year scholarship to Harvard University based upon his outstanding trapshooting career as a sub-junior and junior ATA member. Justin became interested in trap when he was in fourth grade and attended a local 4-H Shooting Sports program back home in Abc, Ohio. He has been coached by Bob Someone for the past six years and says, I owe it all to Bob. Without his help and encouragement, I would never have been able to travel to all the shoots and have the opportunities I have had in this sport. I just wish every kid had a Bob.

And speaking of Bobs, Bob Septer, Class B winner, was celebrating his first perfect score and his first ATA trophy. Hes a two-year shooter and was hoping this would be the place where he could lay a claim to fame. Bob explained, I was born here 99 years ago and moved to Podunk, Ohio, when I was three years old. I decided if I was going to leave a mark here in Mason, Id better get busy and do it now.
